
LELAND, N.C. (WTVD) -- Authorities are responding to a crash involving an overturned Cumberland County Schools activity bus carrying members of the Douglas Byrd High School football team.
According to ABC11 affiliate WWAY, 33 people were on board the bus, including 26 students and seven adults. The team was returning to Fayetteville after participating in a 7-on-7 football scrimmage against South Brunswick High School.
Officials said two adults and two students were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The remaining passengers are expected to undergo medical evaluations.
The crash happened on the ramp from U.S. Highway 17 North to U.S. Highway 74 West, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The ramp remains closed as emergency crews work at the scene.
Authorities have not released what caused the crash.
Cumberland County Schools released a statement to ABC11, saying they are aware of the bus accident.
"Out of an abundance of caution, those involved in the accident are being evaluated by medical personnel, and the district is coordinating transportation for students to return home safely," the statement said. "We appreciate the quick response of law enforcement and medical personnel. Our focus at this time is on supporting our students, staff and families."
